This year a new cast of Hurricane Watch has been formed and 41 students are ready to take on the challenge of making the show a huge hit.
This year the Hurricane Watch has 39 new students, with only two returning “veterans,” seniors Eric Silverman, who is in period 3 and Carly Bossung who is in period 6. The downside of so many “newbies” is that most of the class has to learn the ropes of the class: interviewing, editing, filming, and anchoring (among others). But, the upside is these students have fresh ideas and the desire to make the show better than the past.
Senior Marc Cotter, a member of the period 3 class, has a lot of experience with editing and filming. He hopes to improve the quality of the show with “different camera angles and better script writing.”
The new cast wants their Hurricane Watch to become the best and to be recognized for how they changed the “game,” like Joe Palagonia and Brian Hoffman did in 2010. Senior John LaMura says that he will be “providing creative ideas” to make the show better.
Broadcast Journalism is one of the most popular classes to take in the high school and these 41 students are the “Chosen Ones” to build on the success of the old show.
This year there is a friendly “competition” in the air between the two classes. Each class wants to “one up” each other and try to make their show better than the last.
First period is given an extra five minutes to watch for homeroom, and first period teachers should not make their students “watch it on their own time.” The school comes together as a community on Friday mornings at 7:30 to watch our student news show.
This year the Hurricane Watch crew has a lot on their plate – to make the show awesome and to show that there is a reason for teachers to watch. It will be exciting to see what these students produce.
Hopefully the show will be enjoyable for everyone, including alumni, teachers, staff and you can’t forget about the YouTube peeps. For a behind-the-scenes look, follow the Watch on Instagram @hurricanewatch.
