Battle Of The Bleachers

Battle+Of+The+Bleachers

Blood, sweat and tears go into decorating the bleachers for spirit week. Between hectic holidays, crazy competition and perfect planning, seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen tried their hardest to win it all. The decorated bleachers were the final touch on top of a perfect spirit week celebrated at Westhampton Beach High School.

The planning began on Monday, September 18th, when the student government held an optional but encouraged meeting that was open to the entire school to attend. Students were able to vote on what the theme of the bleachers should be, with the options being holidays, video games, music genres, countries, superheroes, movies and cartoons. The theme Holidays came in first with the most votes.

Seniors had the first pick, choosing Valentine’s day as their holiday. Talking about their thought process on why they wanted Valentine’s day, senior Chloe Mosher said “We thought it would be a fun look and a good color scheme with the pink, red, and white balloons, streamers, and other decorations. We also had a vision for the art we would create for the bleachers.”

Juniors had the next pick, going straight for Halloween. Focusing on their game plan for their decorating set up, junior class president Halle Geller said, “We had multiple meetings that anyone in the grade was welcome to attend and come up with a general plan and supplies we would need. Then I went out and bought some stuff. A lot of people brought stuff from home, and after we decided on a design, we worked on it for the rest of the week.”

Up next was sophomores choosing Christmas, and last but not least the freshmen chose The Fourth Of July.

As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and it did exactly that. One week felt like one day and the next thing students know it is the day of the battle. All grades raced to get to the gym at an early 6:30 AM. Students had the chance to decorate until 7:30, when the first bell rings. The gym was covered in streamers, signs, and students.

When 1:31 rolled around, students and faculty reported back to the gym for an amazing pep rally. Last in the schedule was the announcement of the bleachers winners. With a long drumroll, student government advisor Mrs Luciano announced that the freshmen won first place, seniors second, juniors third and the sophomores came in last.

Sophomore Priscilla Riberio thought the ranking was fair. She was a good sport and said, “I agree that the ranking was fair and I personally think that the freshmen were very dedicated to their bleachers so they deserved it”.

Nico Grazina spoke about the freshmen’s big win. If he thinks the last pick worked out in their favor, he said, “Yes because it was simple yet effective and we won in the end.”

Spirit week was left off on a high note, leaving the seniors one to remember.
