Community Service: for some, it’s the dreaded time in spring when you rush to finish the required hours for school. For others, like Ethan Dornfield, it is simply a life choice.
Ethan is apart of “Rock & Wrap it up”, an organization that gives extra food to people who can’t get it for themselves. “Every Friday since I started high school I take unsold food from the cafeteria and bring it to the C.H.I. Men’s Shelter in Riverhead. It’s been like six thousand pounds of food so far!”
So how did this all start? “I was at a concert at Jones Beach and saw a stand for the program and they were collecting food backstage. I thought it was cool that they started branching out to school districts.”
Still, why bother? Ethan says, “It’s a good thing to do for people in need and it’s a great feeling to give back.”
High school principal Mr. Herr says, “It’s absolutely remarkable the amount of time Ethan’s put in for people less fortunate. He’s taken it to the next level. He’s been amazing, collecting thousands of pounds of food for kids, adults, and people of all ages. I admire Ethan’s commitment to helping others, his passion, and his hard work. He’s organized, created, and lead. He’s flourished over the last four years. Ethan’s my guy.”
As for after high school, Ethan says, “I want to be a professional musician and major in performance as a drummer or become a screenwriter.”
