On February 8th the Westhampton Beach wrestling team visited Shoreham-Wading River High School for the League VI Wrestling Tournament. Six wrestlers gained all-league status and will advance on to the Section XI tournament at Hofstra this weekend. Kyle Maddock was crowned Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Senior co-captain Kyle Maddock was the only league champ for Westhampton Beach after he pinned Chris Meloni of Shoreham Wading River in the finals who he lost to earlier in the season. Maddock’s 5-2 decision in the semi-finals was over Chris D’Amico from John Glenn who was all county in 2012. Maddock beat D’Amico earlier in the season in a 5-3 decision. Maddock had a bye first round and then a pin in the quarter finals. He will be heading to the Section XI tournament with an impressive 31-10 record.

Kyle said, “I feel that this past league tournament was the best I’ve ever wrestled. It is great to finally achieve what I’ve been working for since I was a little kid. My favorite moment of the season was probably when I pinned Meloni in the league finals. Everyone in the stands was going crazy and it was just awesome to get my revenge.”

Senior co-captain Ryan Osborne also had an impressive performance. He pinned his first three opponents, not having a match that continued into the third period. In the finals he lost a hard fought match against Dan Henry of Mount Sinai High School in which he lost in a 6-5 decision. Osborne is leading the team this year with 26 pins. Osborne will have 31-9 record heading into the Section XI tournament.

Coming in third place were seniors Jake Martin and Esteban Garcia as well as Hunter Hulse. All three wrestlers lost hard fought semi final matches but capitalized on the losses with wins to take third place. Hunter Hulse lost a hard fought 7-2 decision to Amityville’s Eduardo Ramirez who is currently ranked 1st in the county. Hulse went on to pin his John Glenn opponent to take third. Senior Esteban Garcia won an 11-0 major decision to take third. Senior co-captain Jake Martin lost a close 3-0 decision against John Glenn’s Ian Cagne. He went on to win a 6-3 decision to take third place.

The future of Hurricane wrestling looks bright, and leading it is no one better than East Moriches 7th grader Liam McIntyre. McIntyre placed 4th at the League VI Tournament and has an 18-13 record so far this season. He is one of the six wrestlers that will be competing at the Section XI Tournament this weekend.

The Hurricane wrestling team went 13-14 this season with a successful 4-3 league record. Their last match against Miller Place was very close and Westhampton ended up losing 33-30. At the League VI Tournament the Hurricanes came in 3rd place, behind John Glenn (320.5 points) and Shoreham Wading River (226.5 points), with a total team score of 108.5 points. The team looks to make a mark at the Section XI Tournament this weekend.
