Breaking Bad Habits

Breaking Bad Habits

Does the irritability that comes along with wanting to bite your nails in class ever annoy you? Or the fact that you can’t get anywhere on time? Everybody has his or her bad habits, and what better time than the New Year to try and break them.

Junior Robert Dunning can’t help but get home from school and take naps. He takes naps from around 5-7 pm each day causing him to not be able to go to sleep until late at night since he is already well rested. Robert’s bad habit started last year and he hasn’t been able to stop since. Though it hasn’t changed over time, he always tries to stay awake but ends up falling asleep anyway.

If you have a similar habit to Robert, you can try keeping yourself busy until it’s time for bed. There’s always room to hang out with friends, study, or play a sport!

Like many people, sophomore Taylor Gregory picked up the bad habit of biting her nails. Taylor said, “I always try to keep my nails short and painted so I don’t bite them but sometimes when stress takes over I can’t help it.” Her habit began when she first entered high school and has gotten a little better since. This habit affects Taylor by making her self conscious of her nails.

If you ever receive the urge to bite your nails, professionals suggest trying to squeeze your fist instead.

Since freshman year, junior Louis Castro has gotten the urge to snack late at night.  When he does late night eating, the next morning he isn’t hungry for food and breakfast is the most important meal. Louis has stopped his bad habit by “making myself concentrate on other things and keeping myself busy so I don’t get tempted to get a late night snack.”

Instead of late night snacking, get in bed early and keep yourself concentrated on something like a book or television.

Whatever your bad habit is, it’s never too late to stop –or at least try to stop!
