The WHB Hurricanes faced the 2012 Suffolk champ Sayville on September 11 at Sayville.
This was the first game for the varsity team. The final score was Sayville 38, Westhampton 19. Senior captain Evan Gagne scored two of the Hurricane’s touchdowns, and Tyler Phillips scored in the third quarter. This was Sayville’s 400th win according to Newsday.
Last season, the Hurricanes had one of its best seasons. Highlights from the 2012 season include finishing the regular season with a 5-3 record and upsetting Miller Place, 19-14 in the Suffolk County Division III semifinals. They again faced Sayville in the Suffolk Division III Championship game, losing 36-7. Although they lost to the undefeated Golden Flashes, theteam was still proud of their successful season.
This year’s seniors include Captains Liam Culhane, Zach Rignola, and Evan Gagne, as well as Tommy Speer, Tyler Phillips, Kayne Mitchell, Timmy Hoare, Steven Tagliavia, Bobby Love, Jack Fink, Matt Connor, and Kyle Ebrus. Senior Max Pastor joins the team as a kicker this year.
QB Tagliavia fills the spot left by graduating senior Jack Murphy.
This season, the Hurricanes will still look to finally get the division crown, although the team graduated more than 20 players,including captains Brian Culhane, Jack Murphy, and Brian Corrigan who were all two-way starters.
