Junior Sarah Culver spikes over the net in last Thursday’s game against Sayville.

This past Thursday the girls’ volleyball team had their last home game against Sayville. The Lady Canes had a great season and are ready for playoffs.

Not only was this the Lady Canes’ last home game, it was also the senior game. Each senior was presented with flowers from their parents. WHB honored six seniors: Ivonne Grunseich, Brenna Hogan, Ashlyn Kennedy, Zoë Recchion, Alexa Smith, and Morgan Tiska. Each girl also had a poster made and got a paper volleyball signed from all the girls on the team.

In the first set, Sayville got the first point and the lead but the Lady Canes soon came back when senior Brenna Hogan spiked the ball tying the game at 8-8. The Canes had the lead for a while, but Sayville soon caught up. With help from senior Morgan Tiska, junior Sarah Culver, and sophomores Arianna Brierton and Shea Casey, the Lady Canes got back the lead and won the set. The set point was a block from sophomore Sunny Foglia.

In the second set, Sayville started with the lead and had the lead the whole set. Halfway through the Lady Canes started to catch up with spikes from Brenna Hogan and Sarah Culver. But, Sayville still won the set. In the third set the Canes had the lead with help from Lauren Lorefice, Shea Casey and Arianna Brierton, and senior Alexa Smith. Unfortunately, Sayville caught up and won the set.

In the fourth and final set, the girls were pushing hard to win. Sayville had the lead and the Lady Canes started to catch up with a pass from Foglia to Casey to Hogan, who spiked the ball. Sadly, the Lady Canes were not able to catch up and they lost the set and the game. Morgan Tiska said, “The game went up and down.  We are very close in talent with Sayville and could have gone either way.”

About this season, Alexa Smith said, “I couldn’t be more proud of all the girls; we are really working together.” She also said that beating Islip in three sets is her favorite memory of this season.

Morgan Tiska said, “All the girls care so much about getting better. We win together, we lose together.  We are a family.”

This game leaves the Lady Canes at a record of 7-4 and their next game is an away game and it is at Shoreham Wading River at 4:00 pm.
