On May 20, 2014, the Lady Hurricanes LAX team fell short in a heartbreaking 13-10 defeat at the hands of ESM. The team was coming off a great victory against Islip, which was their 1st playoff victory ever, but failed to capitalize off that momentum.

The game started off in the Lady Canes’ favor with a nice 5-2 lead, but the lead would diminish; it seemed the Sharks were too overwhelming at times. The game would go back and forth until the end when the Sharks would prove their attack would be too much to handle. Isabella Recchion and Alexa Smith led the offense in a valiant effort.

Despite the loss, the season should and is considered a success by many. Despite the previous coach leaving very close to the start of this season, the new head coach Mary Bergmann has brought a winning culture to the program that seems to be here to stay.  Senior Lauren Smith agreed stating, “ I know Coach B. has changed the program for the better. We were all  nervous because we didn’t know what to expect.  Honestly, this year, we didn’t want to leave practice and go home.”

Lauren also said that although they all wanted more, the team has “nothing to be ashamed of, ESM is and will be a competitive team for years to come.” ESM was the top seed in the playoffs; WHB came close to dethroning them twice. They also lost a close game in their previous meeting at home. Sophomore Julia Lewis said, “We deserved to win. I am very disappointed about how the season ended. We had all the potential to win the game but too many of our mistakes resulted in unanswered goals. Next year we will be back to win. “

Although it wasn’t the result they hoped for, it seems that happy days are here again for the Lady Hurricanes.
