Boys Lacrosse off to a Great Start

Only a little more than a quarter way through the season and the WHB boys’ lacrosse team is off to a great start.  The Hurricanes are 4-1 overall, 3-1 in League play, sitting at the two seed in Class B.

The Canes opened up the season with a home League game against 4th ranked Sayville. Last year in the first round of playoffs, Sayville beat Westhampton 11 to 7, ending Westhampton’s season. The Hurricanes upset the Sayville Golden Flashes 9-8, which was a huge victory for the Canes and a great way to start the season.

The next game, four days later, was a non-league game against Elmont. Westhampton won 16-2. The Hurricanes faced their first lost of the season when they lost to Miller Place 8-6. This loss put the Canes at a record of 2-1, 1-1 in league play.

After losing to Miller Place, the next game, two days later against Mt. Sinai was a must win for the Hurricanes. Westhampton bounced back and won a defensive game vs. Mt. Sinai 3-2. With the weekend to rest up, the Canes faced their biggest test of the season, number one ranked Shoreham Wading River. The Hurricanes pulled off a shocking upset 8-7 over the Wild Cats. This was the first time Westhampton has ever beaten Shoreham Wading River in boy’s lacrosse. Zach Rignola scored the winning goal with 6:06 left in the game. After the game Zach Rignola said, “It’s a huge win for us and the program.”

The Hurricanes are in a great spot right now, and are hoping to continue their success throughout the season. The Canes head to Bayport on Thursday April 10. The next home game is Monday April 14 at 4:30 against Easthampton.
