Volleyball is the most anticipated sport played during gym class, and the only activity that many students actually try in! Many teams are just forming for this competition, but students are already feeling the pressure of wanting to win.  With 18 gym classes, and one team representing each class, only one team will be the winner.

The volleyball unit is eight weeks of fun. Currently the gym classes are in a “practice period”, where students can figure out what teams they want to be on for the actual tournament and practice their techniques. The actual tournament is Wednesday, February 22nd, 2014.

Mr. O’Brien said, “During the off season the nets were vandalized and trashed, which delayed the start of the unit.” With the delay many thought they had cut the beloved volleyball unit! But how could the volleyball teachers break a tradition that has been going on for many years.

Most of WHB takes this tournament seriously. From simply watching the practice matches go on in gym, it is obvious to tell that there are serious rivals between teams. Lauren Lorefice, girl’s varsity volleyball player, said, “I take gym volleyball very seriously because it’s really fun when your team goes to the finals.” Everyone wants to be in the finals. Lauren’s team went to the finals two years in a row. She said that the trick to winning is “having good athletes on your team.”

Erik Nidzyn, varsity boys volleyball player, said, “Gym volleyball is not simply another unit, gym volleyball isn’t even a sport. Gym volleyball is a lifestyle.” His team, team 5, has gone a two-week perfect record and because of this he is predicting a championship ring for 2014.

Watch out WHB, looks like we have some competition going down!
