Wrestling Team Looking for Another Successful Season

Stepping into big shoes is a must this year for the wrestling team, who is looking to win another league title after last year’s history breaking season.

The Canes went undefeated last season in league matches with a 7-0 record and a 21-4 overall record. This year’s squad will be led by captains Kyle Maddock and Aiden Kravitz, along with seniors Jake Martin and Ryan Osborne.

This year’s squad will feature a handful of newcomers to the varsity list, especially Hunter Hulse, a transfer and good friend of mine, from Stony Brook High School. Hunter is a two time county champ and is looking to go even further the next two years. He is also known to be the “beasts of all beasts.”

Kyle Maddock will be one of the main features this year after placing in leagues his sophomore and junior years and looking to break 100 wins.

Senior Jake Martin is also looking to prove himself in counties after winning leagues last year in an impressive manor.

Senior Ryan Osborne, aka “Hawk”, is one of the senior leaders also looking to make his mark going past leagues into counties.

After the loss of many senior leaders due to graduation, such as Pete Broccoli, Christian Intorcia, Ben Zequiri, Liam Bass, Brian Corrigan, and Nick Strand, this will be a rebuilding year with much talent that will look to show themselves and to prove to the league that Westhampton is still league winning material.

Both Kravitz and Maddock are crediting this year’s season to this past off season work. “The off-season was important this year,” said Kravitz, noting that they lifted four days a week with practice being one to two days on top of lifting.

The biggest loss of the seniors was Alex Tanzman, one of the most successful wrestlers to ever come through Westhampton, making it all the way to the states final his senior year. Alex achieved over 100 wins in just three years, the fastest wrestler to do so in Westhampton Beach history. Alex is now wrestling for Duke University, where was recruited and is red shirting his freshman year.

Wrestling season starts in four weeks and is expecting a packed out house for the first meet. All come down and support our Hurricane wrestlers.
