Race walking, the activity combining the endurance of a long distance runner with the attention or technique of a hurdler, is the competition of choice for sophomore, Natalie Ehlers and senior, Kelsey Jordan this season.

Race walking is definitely a unique activity “It’s not running, You have to keep one foot on the ground at all times and when your foot makes contact with the ground your knee has to be locked” Said Natalie Ehlers.

Natalie joined the sport last year. Originally she was a mid-distance runner, but was inspired by her friend Kelsey to give race-walking a try, and ever since has stuck to it. With hopes of making it to nationals in the upcoming spring, Natalie is working very hard. She also wants others who are looking into race walking to know, that “No-one race walks the same, so don’t compare yourself to the best person on the team and don’t try copy their style because your body will only do what it can physically do.”

Kelsey Jordan has been race walking since her freshman year. And is 3rd in the nation. She won a bronze medal her junior year at Nationals, and earned all American honor in the 1,500-meter race walk held in North Carolina, A&T University. She aims to become the National Champion by placing 1st at Nationals.

Kelsey also encourages others to out and try something new “It’s different but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. It might look weird or something but you might really like it. You should always just give it a try because you never know”.

The Hurricane Eye wishes the winter track team GOOD LUCK!
