WHBHS came together as a family to transform the lobby into a winter-wonderland. Mrs. Jacob (the organizer of the event, which took place on December 8) and various clubs such as Key club, GSA, Friends for Friends, Art club, and Interact club all helped to make the halls and give the school some holiday spirit.
This December tradition, which has been successfully occurring for four years now, blows warmth and happiness throughout the school while also helping out the community. Each club chose an organization, such a Camp Good Grief or Toys for Tots, which students can donate to.
Mrs. Jacob and Key Club, who initially began this event, said, “We thought a great way to get more clubs and students involved would be to have all of the various causes, and their donation boxes, in the lobby so people would know what they can bring in to donate, and know exactly where it was to go.” Plus, she added, “It’s a festive way to get the school in the holiday spirit.”
There was much excitement in the lobby on this cold December afternoon as holiday music flowed through the school and Mrs. Merendino’s famous “Giving Tree” was assembled. Club members hung handmade decorations and ribbons from the ceiling; the walls were plastered with posters and the art club contributed with their traditional gingerbread community. The area was glowing when the final bell rang with, of course, Christmas lights as the final touch.
Now that the decorating is done, each club needs the help of the student body to fill their donation boxes. “Ultimately we want students to go home and look through their closets for coats, check their rooms for unwanted clothes, and go to the store for food or toys to donate,” said Mrs. Jacob.
This annual event is the perfect start to the holiday season. Students react with smiles and awe and club members are able to work together to make the lobby decoration the best that it can be. The lobby is now covered in snowflakes, sparkles and spirit as the December celebrations quickly approach – Happy Holidays WHB!
