WHBHS will benefit from new improvements, such as C.A.U.S.E. fundraising and alternate energy sources, being made by students involved with C.U.R.E. (Classmates United in Restoring the Environment)
Currently, C.U.R.E. is promoting their solar energy initiative by selling ceramic tiles that will soon be installed in the courtyard. “We hope that if C.A.U.S.E. (C.U.R.E. Alumni Undertaking Solar Energy) sells enough tiles and makes enough money, we will be able to expand our horizons to wind power, said president Olivia Percoco. As of right now, C.U.R.E. has provided WHBHS with solar panels on the roof, making the school more alternative-energy dependent.
Of course C.U.R.E. will still be managing the schools recycling program, which is a very important aspect of the club. After school, members collect the recyclables and put them in dumpsters which are later transported to the proper facilities. Recycling is an easy way to help the school be more environmentally friendly. “All you have to do is put bottles in the blue cans, paper in the green, and never put any garbage in the recycling bins – that’s what the garbage cans are for. C.U.R.E. takes care of the rest,” said vice-president Jane Costantino. “Paper towels and tissues are definitely not recyclable, and neither is Styrofoam, [and] unfortunately the plastic containers that lunch sandwiches are served in are not recyclable either,” added Olivia Percoco.
The school uses an abundance of materials such as paper and plastic, thus the recycling program is necessary to keep these things from going to waste.
C.U.R.E. has helped recycle WHBHS and beautify the school. As C.U.R.E. continues to spread awareness to students and faculty, they will be holding various fundraisers that you could participate in. Throughout the year, C.U.R.E. will be hosting “the Battle of the Bands” and “the 30 Hour Famine” as well as selling eco-canteens and tiles for C.A.U.S.E.
Olivia Percoco hopes that C.U.R.E. will become more of a community outreach program this year, and will be focusing on giving everyone the opportunity to help the environment. Olivia stated, “We want C.A.U.S.E. to really take off; this year we are really focusing on alternative energy and reducing our negative impact on the environment…C.U.R.E. is giving students the opportunity to have fun while being environmentally friendly.
The club meets every Friday at 2:30 in the wet lab (and has many new ideas for the 2011-2012 school year.) Come on and stop by!
