The Westhampton Beach girls’ varsity lacrosse team took on Bayport-Blue Point on Tuesday, May 22nd, for a spot in Counties. After triple overtime, the Canes took home the win with a final score of 10-9.

Tuesday’s game was a nail biter. Between the rain and the intense strain of both teams desperately wanting to win, everyone was on the edges of their seats.

The Lady Canes had a five point lead at the half. But with seven seconds left in the second half, the Phantoms scored the one point needed to tie the game and force overtime.

As they headed into triple overtime, junior Lindsay Rongo scooped up a ground ball on the defensive end and carried it up the field.  Senior Hailey Daleo saw the perfect opening and fed the ball to Junior Hollie Schliecher who turned, shot and scored! The crowd went wild! This will be the first time in program history the Lady Canes will be playing in counties.

Sophomore Toni Cashman said, “It was amazing, we were all on the sideline screaming. When Hollie scored the winning shot, we all just froze then ran as fast as we could over to Hollie.”

With the help from key players, Hailey Daleo, Isabelle Smith, and Hollie Schliecher, the Hurricanes took the win. Both Smith and Schliecher scored three times, and Daleo scored four. Goalie, Eleanor Kast, had six saves.

Senior and team captain Emilee Downs said, “Our goal for the next game is to beat Mount Sinai and prove to everybody that we can do it.”
