Most people dread running the mile at the beginning of the year. But one Bio teacher at WHBHS lives for running.
That would be none other than Mr. Broich. He runs around 20 miles a week in the winter, and up to 60 in the spring. That totals to more than 100 miles a month, every month of the year!
Besides running all the time, Mr. Broich is also the coach for the girl’s track team, a surfer, cycler, mountain biker, night rider, and a basketball player. His favorite saying is “Have as much fun doing what you like.” Another is “Everybody can run.” If given the chance to switch jobs from being a bio teacher to becoming full-time runner, he said he wouldn’t because he likes what he does.
Mr. Broich was inspired to run when he was on the wrestling team. He liked it ever since because he could be in front of everybody else. He’s done more than 10 marathons since! Mr. Broich did the NYC Marathon four times, The Lake Placid Ironman three times, The Endorphin fix 48hr Adventure Race three times, the Xterra USA Champions, the Rhode Island Ironman, and the NYC Ultra Marathon all once.
When asked if he ever would stop running, he said he never would. Besides always being a jokester in class, Mr. Broich is a great inspiration for those who want to pursue their dreams and do what they love.
