Columbus Day + Jewish Holiday = Long Weekend for WHBHS

Wait, we have a 5 day weekend? That is what many students have been saying when asked about their plans. On October 10th,11th, and 12th we have off from school  due to Columbus day on Monday the 10th, a conference day for the teachers on the 11th, and Yom Kippur on the 12th.

It is very rare for there to be a five day weekend, and even more rare after a four day weekend.

Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday which is a twenty-four hour fast in remembrance of when ancestors made the trip to the holy land and to repent sins. It is also known as The Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur is one week after the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah.

Beginning at sundown on October 11th, Yom Kippur ends at sundown the next day. Many different people celebrate in different ways.

Junior Maddy Seitles describes Yom Kippur as a solemn day. She goes to Temple in the morning. They break the fast by having breakfast for dinner at her grandparents. She said that they have bagels and lox.

Senior Sophie Cohen celebrates Yom Kippur a little differently.  A family friend hosts a big party, with lots of food to break the fast. Some of the food she says they have are noodle pudding, gefilte fish, and Matzo ball soup. For dessert they have pies, cakes, brownies, and baklava.

Some students are using the days off to travel. Sophomore Elena DeVita will be using the weekend as the last few days of her nine day trip to Greece. Hannah Donneson, a sophomore, is going to visit colleges in North Carolina and will be seeing the Duke verse Army football game. Sophomore Brielle Hanratty is going to Delaware to visit her sister in college.

Others are using the five days to have a stay-cation.  Sophomore Tate Buhl joked he’s “very excited to cut down the line,” while describing his plans to use the long weekend to go surfing.

Whatever you’re doing, The Hurricane Eye hopes you have a fun and safe weekend.
