Seniors, before you go out to lunch, make sure you give your ID! Is this a joke or reality? It’s reality; in order to go enjoy lunch out of school you must show that you truly are a senior.
This rule was instated for “safety and security of the building,” according to Mr. Herr. The rule came about because, Mr. Herr explained, “Every year the school itself tries to think of new rules for the building and enhance the security.”
School monitor Mrs. Lehman had explained how it works. “Every senior leaving for lunch has to leave their ID card at the desk and if they don’t have their ID card they have to fill out a little piece of paper with their name and lunch period. They pick up their ID cards when they come back.” Mrs. Lehman also has a list of who is in which lunch period to make sure students are not taking two lunches!
Rumors have been circulating that by next year seniors won’t have the privilege to go out. Mr. Herr spoke about this, “As of right now it is a board policy that seniors have the privileges. Whether to leave open or close campus is a healthy conversation. No decisions will go without conversation with a number of people: faculty, staff, students, student leaders and parents.”
“I know of Southampton using some what of the same technique, but their ID cards have a bar code and they scan themselves in in order to get in the school building,” says Ms. Lehman. William Floyd also has a similar system.
Going out for lunch is a wonderful thing to look forward to while in your senior year. Mr. Herr recognizes that it helps students get ready for the real world, for work or college. This rule is instated for the safety and well-being of students. Don’t abuse the system!
