On December 12th 2015 the UFC crowned a new Men’s Featherweight Champion, the Irishman Conor “The Notorious” McGregor. It took only 13 seconds to end the decade long reign of the Brazilian Jose Aldo. After months of trash talk and bad blood, UFC 194 proved to be the undoing of Jose Aldo.

Last summer, Conor McGregor was declared Interim UFC Featherweight Champion. Jose Aldo who was unable to fight, was forced to relinquish his role as champion. The fight on December 12th was to decide the real champion of the featherweight class. For months there was trash talk between the two camps. Aldo claimed that he is the real featherweight champion and that McGregor’s belt isn’t real. There was multiple staring contests and shouting matches during media tour.

Almost 7 years ago, a young Conor McGregor said, “My dream is to become champion in the UFC and have more money than I know what to do with.” Conor McGregor grew up in Crumlin, Ireland, a town just outside of Dublin. He started out boxing at a local gym, but he was fascinated by grappling and mixed martial arts. Eventually he stopped boxing completely to focus on mixed martial arts. Conor fought his way into the position to fight Jose and accomplish the goal he had set out to achieve many years ago.

In July of 2015 at UFC 184, McGregor was supposed to fight for the featherweight championship. Unfortunately, Jose broke one of his ribs during training and decided that he was unfit to fight. After the long period of bickering and jawing between the two fighters during the media tour there was to be no fight until December 2015. McGregor was now going to fight Chad Mendez, a very good fighter who had fought Jose twice and lost. McGregor said he was going to “Rip his head off.” Just after the beginning of the second round McGregor, beat Mendez into submission so badly that the referee was forced to stop the fight. McGregor was now the Interim Featherweight Champion and earned his spot to finally fight Jose at UFC 194 to become the undisputed champion.

Now it was finally going to happen, the tension between McGregor and Aldo was higher than ever as they stepped into the ring for the main event of UFC 194. Aldo had said that McGregor’s interim belt was fake and that he would crush him just like he had crushed the 10 others who had tried to take his belt in previous years. Aldo’s wife said, “He (McGregor) looks psycho.” Conor predicted that he would knock Aldo out within the first 4 minutes of the match, but he wouldn’t need nearly that much time. As soon as the bell rang and the fight began, Aldo took one big swing at McGregor. Seeing that Aldo had over extended himself, McGregor threw one left hook right at Aldo’s chin. Aldo fell to the floor of the octagon knocked out cold. All this had transpired in the course of 13 seconds. It only took 13 seconds for McGregor to achieve a goal that he had worked so hard for his entire life and become the UFC World Featherweight Champion.

As far as Aldo is concerned, this may is not over yet. A weary and shaken Aldo said after the fight that this was no fight at all and that he wants a rematch with McGregor. 10th grader Garrett Davis said, ”I don’t think that it was a real fight. Aldo deserves another opportunity but McGregor will beat him again anyway.” Now that McGregor has backed up all of his arrogant trash talk building up to the fight, he has become somewhat of a legend. The fight between McGregor and Aldo was the shortest title fight ever recorded in the history of the UFC. 10th grader Cameron Dowling said, “I like Conor McGregor because he talks about how bad he is going to beat up other fighters and then goes out and does it.” The feud between Aldo and McGregor is far from over. Many people are speculating that there will most definitely be a rematch between the two fighters. The McGregor versus Aldo fight at UFC 194 was considered by many to be the biggest fight in UFC history and it only lasted 13 seconds.
