The girls’ varsity lacrosse season ended on May 20th with a disappointing loss to cross-town rival ESM. This game was the first ever semifinal game in lacrosse program history. The team had a breakout season with the leadership of head coach Mary Bergmann and assistant coach J.M. Jackson.

Starting the season in the 10th seed, the girls worked their way into a 5th seed playoff ranking. The team even pulled off an upset in playoffs when they defeated the 4th ranked seed Islip in the first round of the playoffs, making school history. “Coach Jackson and I knew from our first game against a full strength Babylon that we could go all the way.  Our main feat this season was getting the girls to believe.  In 18 games we went from a team that was “proud of losing only by one goal” to a team who truly believed and showed that they wanted to win a county championship,” said Bergmann.

The strength of the team off the field helped bring the team together on the field. “The mental transformation of these 21 girls is something that will push this program forward into the future,” said Coach Bergmann. This season was the team’s first ever organized trip to Boston. This trip was one of Alexa Smith’s and Zoe Recchion’s many highlights of the year.

This year the team is losing six seniors to graduation: Lauren Smith, Brooke Alpert, Alexa Smith, Zoe Recchion, Kristina Modica, and Emma Gristina. Each one of these players was a key component to the team’s success this year. Zoe will be playing at Syracuse next year and Alexa will be playing at Monmouth. Even with the loss of the six seniors Coach Bergmann plans on having a strong team next year. “These girls turned an unexpected corner this season into a bright future for the WHB girl’s lacrosse program,” said Bergmann.
