Prom Partners from Other Places

While many juniors are excited for prom coming up on May 3rd, some students are disappointed that they cannot bring the date they want because they don’t attend WHBHS. It’s unfortunate that some students won’t get to spend their first prom with their partner, but WHBHS has reasons for this.

A rule at WHBHS is juniors cannot bring a date from another school to Junior Prom. This upsets students because they can’t have the prom they imagined.

According to assistant principal Mr. Bookamer, “This hasn’t always been a rule. It was changed about 5 to 10 years ago. Senior prom is more of an event and junior prom is more of a junior class only event to keep it smaller.”

Mr. Bookamer also explained that Junior Prom is also open to students of other grades, as long as they sign out a form by a parent or guardian. “We have more control of our students at Junior Prom when there are fewer kids from other districts.”

Junior Antonella Russo, “I believe bringing a date from another school shouldn’t be as big of an issue as it is. As long as the date has permission slips and signatures from adults stating they are a good student who won’t be a problem at the prom, they should be allowed to go. Having a boyfriend that goes to another school, it’s upsetting to go to prom alone without a date because I’m not allowed to bring a date to my school, especially since I’m allowed to go to his prom.”

Junior Lana Blowes is disappointed, but understands. She said, “ I’m allowed to go to his prom so it’s okay, and I can just go to the WHB prom with my friends.” Students are also allowed to bring a date from another district in senior year. Most other schools on Long Island have different rules, where you could just go to theirs.

Either way, people have different opinions when it comes to junior prom, but WHBHS aims to have a safe controlled Junior Prom. You can still bring your significant other to senior prom too!
