The past three homecomings for the class of 2012 have been very successful. The seniors won best bleachers and best float for the past three years! Three out of four years is pretty impressive!
During their sophomore year, the class created the winning rock and roll float. The slogan was “Rockin like a Hurricane.” Junior year, they had the season autumn, claiming the most memorable decoration- the headstone with “R.I.P Miller Place” in giant letters. After the parade that headstone was moved to the entrance of the homecoming football field for others to see.
But this year, the class had the board game Candy Land, with the crafty slogan, “Sweet Seniors.” There was a lot of preparation involved and everyone worked together to make it successful. But we also kept in mind that it would be our last.
The weekend before spirit week, the class of seniors got together at Mara Terchunian’s house and from there started planning the float. Thanks to Mara’s mom, Ms. Frielinghaus, the art teacher at WHBMS, they were fortunate to have supplies such as paint, poster paper, ribbon, brushes, glue, fake snow, glitter and the room to store creations.
They spent time working on it during lunch periods, after school and during the weekend. Remy Kneski hand-painted the Candy Land sign that went on the front of the truck. Hannah Sadloski and her mom made the giant gingerbread man and painted the board with the game’s characters on it.
Since it would forever be their last, the class spent extra time and effort on this year’s Candy Land float. Ashley Arcuri, president of the senior class, said, “there was tons of pressure to live up to expectations to the previous years. In addition, we had heard rumors that the juniors had good ideas and being our biggest rivals, we knew we couldn’t lose to them senior year!”
While making the float, the class’s biggest struggle was finding a balloon arch. The company that was supposed to provide them with one canceled only a few days before homecoming. It seemed impossible to find an arch, the seniors were in desperate need to find a company to do it. They finally found Balloons Bouquet, which also gave the class a discount on the price. Arcuri remarks, “By Thursday afternoon, only one day before homecoming, we found out we had a balloon arch.” The arch was a great success and at the end of the parade, seniors tied it onto the fence on the football field.
The senior float was a great accomplishment and everyone worked together to accomplish it. The teamwork involved even brought the class closer together. Way to go seniors!
