Really Early Action: The Sophomore College Trip

This past week, 75 students from the sophomore class got a taste of what college life is like. The sophomores took an overnight trip to visit colleges in the Connecticut/Massachusetts/Rhode Island area.

Students visited Providence College, Bentley University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bryant University, Connecticut College, and Babson College. The lucky students that got to go on the trip took tours through the schools, exploring the facilities, options for majors, dorms, and most importantly, the dining halls

Sophomore Daniel Purkis enjoyed Providence College the most. Purkis really liked the campus and tour guide at Providence. He also loved Harvard University. Purkis enjoyed Harvard because of the scenery and the great ambiance. Daniel was also able to get a feel for what kind of schools he did not like. Purkis was not a huge fan of Connecticut College, because it was, “too small and quiet, and there wasn’t really much going on.” Purkis thinks that the college trips are a great opportunity for high school students. “Even though you might not want to go to a certain school, it’s always good to get an idea of the size, the people there, and what type of an environment you want to be in,” stated Purkis.

Sophomore Paul Freda was, “impressed by Bryant and Providence, because of the facilities and programs that the schools had.” Freda also was not a fan of Connecticut College, also because it seemed rather quiet for him. He also agrees that the trips are a great idea for high schoolers. He commented that, “it’s great for students to get out there, and get a feel for what kind of school they want, because there’s so many schools with different characteristics, and it’s important to find the one that’s right for you.”

Overall, both boys said they enjoyed the trip and learned a lot from their tours. They both agreed that the trips would play a part in how they looked at different colleges in the future.

The school-sponsored college trips are definitely a fantastic way for students to become exposed to a few of the options that they may have when looking for a college that’s right for them, and to be able to choose the perfect school.
