“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela.

On Monday May 19th, the most exemplary WHBHS students were recognized for their distinguished hard work at the annual Academic Awards night in the district auditorium.

At the ceremony, 140 awards were distributed to the students. Winners were chosen either by highest average or best effort shown in the class.

Senior Alexa Smith, who won the English 12 and Symphonic Choir awards, said, “I think I put a lot of effort into each of the classes and it was really nice to be recognized for that. If someone else in my class could have won my award I think it would have been Brooke Alpert for English and Kaela Murphy for Chorus.”

Senior Danielle Nill won the Sports Medicine award; this was her first award as well. She said, “I think I deserved this award because I’m the only one who participates and answers Mr. Leogrande’s questions.”

The Spanish IV award winner, junior Brianna Moore, advises students to, “Try your best in class, participate, and join a club regarding that class, such as Spanish Club.”

Freshman Andrew Hempel received the Global History 1 award. This was his first award and he believes he received it because of his hard work and good average.  Andrew said, “For other students who want to get an award you have to try your hardest. You cannot expect to get an award if you slack off in class. You have to be willing to get good grades, but many teachers don’t just choose the student with the highest average, they choose whomever is the most cooperative in class and who is always ready to learn.”

Freshman Reilly Dunning, who received the Geometry award, added, “I think the key to achieving an award is to always work hard and pay attention.”

Alexa advised, “Just put in the time and effort and your teachers will recognize it.”

If you are hoping to win an award, always try your best in class, participate and have determination, your teachers will recognize it. There are 140 opportunities for you, make sure you take them.
