It Would Be Cool to Have Some Air-conditioning

Imagine yourself sitting in class. It’s about 86 degrees outside, and over 100 degrees inside and your forehead is trickling with sweat in a classroom that feels like a sauna. Many students don’t need to imagine this because it’s the reality here in the month of September.

Many schools across America suffer from not having air-conditioning, which is considered a necessity. As the temperature increases attendance decreases because kids try to seek refuge at home in the cold. Your brain process starts to decline when a room temperature reaches about 77 to 78 degrees. The New York Times even states that a class resembles a “19th century sweatshop.”

Westhampton Beach High School invests in things like laptops when what we really need is some cold air. For part of the fall and all of winter this really isn’t necessary but for the last few months of the school year and the beginning of the school year, it’s needed more than ever.

School would be a much better place if it was in an atmosphere comfortable enough for us to enjoy. “Fans don’t really do much” says sophomore Amanda Abel who also thinks it’s time for WHB to get an air-conditioner. Sophomore Sheena Dellapace also agrees that the school needs air-conditioning, especially in the summer “because students need to be comfortable so they can focus on school work and their classwork.”

WHB was one of the schools lucky enough to get Macs, but now it’s time for some cold air. Westhampton Beach High School is a great school district, but it would be even better with A/C.
