Balancing Ballet and Cheer

Sophomore Sidney Heaney, who dances with Peconic Ballet Company, danced in her 4th performance of The Nutcracker at the WHB Performance Art Center this December.

Sidney has been dancing for six years. Some of the dance classes she has taken are ballet and contemporary, and modern she says, “Contemporary is my favorite because it’s more free and it is a way to express yourself”.

Sidney said, “Ballet and modern in comparison to contemporary is more strict and you have to look a certain way, where as in contemporary it is more free- flowing”.

Sophomore Bella Saso said, “Sidney is hardworking and tries her best and it shows when she dances.” Chloe vargas said, “ Sidney is alway really fun to be around in dance and makes everyone laugh.”

With the Nutcracker and cheer, balancing her schedule has become tricky. “I go to school for 6 hours, go to cheer for two, come home, eat dinner, go to dance for average of three hours, then come home and try to do homework.”For Sidney it has become very hard to hang out with friends.

Sidney is dedicated to dance but it is hard to juggle dance, cheer, school and a personal life go check out the performances of the Nutcracker to support Sidney and the rest of the dance company!
