And they’re off!

Winter track season has just begun at WHB. Co-Captains junior Maeve Murphy and senior Kayla Berman gave us an inside scoop of what winter track is all about.

Practices start out with a solid warmup lap, which is then followed with stretching. After stretching, the team starts on the workout, which are pretty difficult in the first couple of months.  Workouts will normally get easier towards the end of the season. Practice occurs as much as six times a week, for an hour or two at a time.

When Maeve was asked what her favorite part of track is, she answered without hesitation, “The best part of track is seeing the results and seeing how Broich reacts to us running fast times. I also like breaking records and keeping up with the rankings.”

In the upcoming season, Maeve plans to be all state for the 600 meter and the 4×400 relay.

To Kayla, the best thing about track “is going to all the cool meets, spending time with friends, and getting in really good shape.” Kayla said she has made some of her best friends through track.

Before the season started, Kayla started running and it is already paying off.

Winter track is one of the colder seasons in WHB, so when going to practice Kayla suggests to bring tons of layers because the weather can be unpredictable.

Last year, the team did really well, and the 4×400 meter team is looking to place at states this year. Kelsey Jordon, a racewalker who graduated last year, went to Nationals and is now going to Manhattanville College for track and field.

Good luck girls on the upcoming season!!
