Ever since Macklemore’s big hit single, Thrift Shop, he’s created a mass wave of people throughout the nation spending their hard earned money on second hand clothing. This might sound insane to those materialistic people out there but believe it or not, out of the closet thrift stores provide people with one of a kind items for a very inexpensive price. It’s a perfect way to show the real you through fashion without leaving your wallet empty.

To me, a great thrift store has to have crazy patterns, bright colors and one-of-a kind vintage items, and that’s exactly what Buffalo Exchange promotes. Buffalo Exchange IS thrift heaven. It gives people a chance to express themselves by spending as little as possible while still looking as fresh as possible.

Their purpose is to create a sustainable business while still protecting the environment by reusing and recycling clothing. They also promote a fun and enjoyable environment for everyones shopping experience especially to those newbies of thrifting. Recently I visited this unique store in the East Village of Manhattan but sadly, in New York they’re only located towards the city so if you’re ever nearby I recommend taking a look. The unbelievable discounts in the store are just as great as the gems filled on each rack.

Like the name, Goodwill strives to make families and individuals a good lifestyle and enhance the quality of it. Like Buffalo Exchange, Goodwill is a nationwide thrift store. Many people swear by it, but in my opinion it’s definitely your average thrift store. It’s full of a lot of over-worn clothing and various smells fill the store, which isn’t so much of a plus. When visiting this thrift store you definitely need to put in the time to completely look through every corner and rack. It’s basically a hit or miss. Some days you’ll find your new “holy grail” for your wardrobe, but as for other times it may feel like your rummaging through your grandma’s closet from who knows when. Some thrifters are completely into that kind of shopping and if you happen to be as well then by all means hop in the car and head to Patchogue where the nearest Goodwill is located.

Sophomore Kristiana Berisha said, “Goodwill is probably my favorite thrift store. Jeans are very important to me and I found my favorite pair of jeans there that were only $3!”

Now that the dreary cold days are over, spring has finally sprung and that means spring cleaning! It’s the right time to get in yourself in order for the up and coming summer of 2014 and you’ll definitely need a new wardrobe for that. So maybe think about visiting a local thrift store (or even donating!) because every trip is full of different surprises, so get creative and start shopping!
