Got Hours?

A common problem for WHBHS students is getting community service hours. With tough schedules, sports, or just being lazy it can be hard to fit in community service. But there are ways (there are!) to get in community service hours.

Why do we do community service? Well the reason for most students is to get in their ten hours a year so they can graduate. But look further. It is good for your community and a small amount of time from a lot of people can make a big difference. Whether it’s cleaning the beach, working a parade, or just helping out a neighbor ,you can never go wrong with community service.

One of the easiest ways is to just do all your service in the summer. With less sports and only work for some, it’s much easier to fit in the time. Over the weekend some sports take up less time than others. After practice in the morning you can spend an hour or two doing community service and within weeks you can get your 10 hours done. Sophomore Maria Pamboris said, “I volunteered at my elementary school’s fall festival in East Moriches. It was a lot of fun working and playing games with the kids.”

Another sophomore, Megan Kuroski, got her community service completed right here at school. She helped volunteer in the Special Olympics. “It was a lot of fun working with the kids and playing basketball with them.” Megan highly recommends it and will be doing it again if the school has one this year.

So get out of bed on a Saturday or take time out of a summer day to go get those hours in. It’s not all boring especially when you do it with friends. The service hours can be used for other things too, like making your confirmation which you will need 15 hours. Remember colleges always look at your community service. So get up and get those hours in!

Once you’ve completed some hours, remember to fill out your service verification forms which can be found in the guidance office.
