Tonight, for the first time in franchise history, the Boston Red Sox will host the American League Wildcard Game against the rival New York Yankees. Here is everything you need to know about the game tonight:

When does it start?

First pitch will be at 8:08 PM.

What channel is the game on?

The game can be seen on ESPN and ESPN2.

Who are the teams?

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Who’s pitching?

For the Yankees, it’s Gerrit Cole. He’s one of the best starters in the league.

The Red Sox are throwing Nathan Eovaldi, who was just smoked against the Yankees in his last start, giving up seven earned runs.

What is a “Wildcard Game?”

It’s a do-or-die game. If you win, you advance to the next round. If you lose, your season is over.

Why are these teams playing?

The Yankees and Red Sox finished 2nd and 3rd in their division, but more importantly they were the two top teams to not win their division. The wildcard round was made to expand the playoffs, allowing two additional teams to compete in October. Even though the Yankees and Red Sox finished with the same record, the Red Sox won the season series 10-9, meaning the game will be played in Boston.

Who is the favorite in the game?

Vegas places the Yankees as the favorite for this game, which is quite surprising. The combination of Gerrit Cole and the most recent sweep of the Red Sox are factors, but the Red Sox are home with the crowd on their side. It’s a tough battle for both teams.

What happens after this game?

The winner of this game will face Tampa Bay on Thursday in Florida for Game One of the American League Division Series.

Two historic franchises. One enormous game. This is set to surely be one of the most entertaining games of the year.
