Since 1929, the Hurricanes have staked their spot as one of the strongest football teams in Suffolk County. From Carl Hansen to the Laube trio, Westhampton boasts an elite group of football players to come through the program.

The program started to form in 1928 with the hiring of former Syracuse running back Carl Hansen.

Hansen struggled to create a team to compete, and struggled in the inaugural 2 seasons . Hansen choraled his team to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1931-32. Westhampton’s worst stretch was from 1941-43 putting together a terrible 1-11-1 in three seasons.

One interesting story is the time in 1947 when the Los Angeles Rams prepared for an NFL game against the Giants, practicing at the field in Westhampton. Arguably the two best players to come out of Westhampton are Dan Jiggetts (class of 1972) and Sean Farrell (Class of 1976).

Dan Jiggetts began his football career for the Hurricanes as an offensive tackle. He continued his career at Harvard, becoming the first African-American captain of the Crimson football team. Jiggets was drafted in the 6th round guard tackle who ended up playing for Penn State.

Farrell was drafted as the 17th overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Over the years, the Hurricanes have qualified for the playoffs 17 times, winning three of six Suffolk County Championship appearances. The Hurricanes went undefeated in the regular season four times, in 1931, 1932, 2017, and 2018. Westhampton has won one Long Island championship in 2017 led by Dylan Laube, one of the best running backs to come out of Westhampton.

Head Coach Schaumloffel said, “Dylan’s work ethic and dedication brought the program to a new level and raised the bar for future players.”

After winning the Hansen, an award named after Carl Hansen given to the best football player in Suffolk County, Dylan has inspired running back Liam Mcintyre to work hard enough to win Westhampton’s second straight Hansen Award.

With senior running back Jaden Alfano-StJohn a potential candidate for the Hansen Award, Jaden could bring home the first three-peat Hansen Award winner for a school. This is extra special to Westhampton because the Hansen Award is named after Carl Hansen, the man that created the Westhampton football program.

After 90 years, the Hurricanes are still rolling strong on the gridiron.
