With all of their greatest threats defeated, WHB’s varsity golf team is 7-1 as of October 11th and is pushing for a league title.

The team’s recent success is largely because of its top three golfers: juniors Cody Sumwalt, Mackenzie Kim and Cole Federico. A fourth golfer, junior Matthew Meyer has also pitched in towards the success while newcomers Tyler Puch and Justin Shui have also scored their first wins.

The one-spot golfer on the team, Mackenzie Kim is confident that the team can be very successful. “As a team coming into this year, we were the favorites to win the league,” he said. “Our main goal as a team is to win counties or even place top six.”

The team’s goals are becoming a reality, as they are 7-1 so far.

Along with the team being successful, Mackenzie has also set personal goals. He was only one shot away from states last year, meaning that he is even more determined this time around. “Personally, I really want to make states this year,” he said. “Only being one shot away last year motivates me even more.”

Along with the top of the rotations, there has also been great success with the back end. Sophomores Tyler Puch and Justin Shui have both achieved their first wins and are striving to improve their game.

“Getting my first win felt really good,” Tyler said. “I have been working very hard and it finally paid off.”

Tyler, a sophomore at WHB, has been golfing since he was seven and hopes to one day play in college. Along with the rest of the team, he agrees that they are very good this year.

”We have been working hard everyday. We already defeated our biggest threats and we are playing East Hampton on Thursday for leagues,” he added.

Like Mackenzie, Tyler has his own personal goals for the season. “I hope to get my handicap to a nine and get a higher seat for the team,” he said.

The golf team’s recent success is a team effort, as everyone is contributing. The team hopes to continue their success when they play East Hampton this afternoon.
