Seniors Say Goodbye to Sports

Cheers, tears, and fears rush through the senior athletes after handing in their jerseys. Fall sports have come to an end, forcing seniors to walk away from the teams they’ve grown to love.

Home of the Hurricanes, WHBHS has around 750 athletes that play at least one sport per year. Out of the 750, approximately 125 athletes are seniors who play at least one sport per year.

Senior Jules Robbins said, “It’s very upsetting not being able to play for WHB anymore since I loved playing with all the girls so much.” She added “I’ve been playing soccer since I could walk, played all through middle school and made varsity as a freshman at WHB.”

During the fall season there are sixteen different teams you can play for at WHB. Senior Jodie Sipala, who plays tennis, said, “It’s really weird to think that I have no more sport seasons left at Westhampton.”

Senior Brenna Hogan loved being able to play for WHB. “I wouldn’t want to represent anywhere else and I’ll always remember the memories and the people that made playing volleyball so special.”

Jules admits, “One thing I regret this season is not putting myself out there. I would have loved to play soccer in college but I never applied myself to go further in my soccer career.” Brenna adds there was much regret to her season as well. “There were points I screwed up, points I was playing too safe and days when I let my mental errors get to me.”

The last game of the season is always tough, but even tougher when it ends with a loss.  “My last match was definitely the toughest loss I had to take because Laura Halsey and I should have won and ended up losing in a tie breaker. I think I tried breaking my racket about 80 times on the way home that day. I was more mad than sad at the time and I couldn’t speak to anyone about it for at least a week,” said Jodie.

Jules was also very emotional over her last game.  She shared, “The big thing that hit me emotionally is not going to be playing with Brooke Alpert anymore. We’ve been on the same team together for eight years and I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else there next to me. We won our last game in double over time which was exciting, but I’m upset the seasons already over.”

Now that some seniors have retired from playing sports at WHB, we wish them luck in their upcoming years in college. Whether they plan to keep going with their sports career or not they will always be a part of the WHB athletics program and forever be a Hurricane.
