PDA in the Halls

Public Displays of Affection, or PDA, is a controversial issue for both couples and on-lookers. PDA can be offensive when people don’t know the limits of public affection.

In a high school setting, there are certain limits to PDA.

Senior Justin Grieco, who is dating junior Skyler Arrasate said, “Giving a peck, hugging, and holding hands” is appropriate in the halls. Junior Jenae Mendoza agreed that “holding hands, a peck on the cheek and hugging is suitable in the halls.”

Chemistry teacher Mrs. Bufalo said, “Holding hands and hugging is appropriate but get out of the way.”

Some PDA is too inappropriate. “Excessive kissing (making out), pushing up against the lockers and touching inappropriately in the halls is inappropriate,” said Skyler. Mrs. Bufalo said, “Anything beyond those things, making out and groping, there’s a time and a place.” Jenae said, “Making out in the halls and being in everybody’s way is annoying.”

“People need to know the limit and respect the way people feel about PDA,” Jenae continued. Ms. Bufalo agreed, “I’m a true believer of a time and place and I think of school like my job so constantly ask yourself ‘Would I do this at work?’”

Assistant Principal Mr. Bookamer stated that WHBHS does not have an official PDA policy. He advised students, “It’s in the public eye, so use discretion but also realize there are others around. Be respectful of yourself and towards others.”
