The first annual Unified Field day at WHBHS, held by senior Laurette Shaumloffel and Mr. Davis, was a success.

The event, which was held on June 2nd, brought together Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays, Southampton and East Hampton school districts. The event provided inclusive activities for students with disabilities.

Laurette said ,“For the last two years, I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work closely with the Functional Academic learning program. I am grateful to have made these friendships and learned from their teachers. I decided that I would run a fun and inclusive event to give back for everything they have given me and to help them accomplish the next step in becoming a Unified Champion School.”

About 70 WHB students volunteered for the events, along with 60 students with disabilities participating from across the Island. Laurette said, “The night before, I was very nervous wondering if the event was going to be a complete failure, but when I got to school the next morning, I knew that it was going to be better than I had thought. The way all the volunteers stepped up to make all of the stunts feel special and included, brought joy to everyone around them. I will never forget the excitement on everyone’s faces.”

If you would like to participate next year you can contact either Haley Wasz or Shannon Sweet who will be taking over Laurette’s role in running the Unified Field Day next year.
