New York City Marathon

New York City Marathon

While you complain about running the mile in class, Wilson Kipsang from Kenya ran 26.2 miles and won in the infamous New York City Marathon. With a time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds he was the overall winner with a huge wad of cash in his wallet.

The road for the runners starts in Staten Island then a run through ‘the burrows’ known as Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx and the race ends in Manhattan’s Central Park. This year’s marathon was a windy one with it resulting in the slowest win in NYC history since 1995. The winners, one male and one female, each get $100,000 for their win.

Kipsang put a lot of effort into training for the race but many key factors helped him take home first place. His body structure and the fact that he runs 110-plus-miles per week helped him win the race. He also won the 2013-2014 World Marathon Majors series title earning him another $500,000. Mary Keitany was the female winner of the race, her final time was 2:25:07. She had just over a mile left but had a burst of energy and won the female race by three seconds. The closest finish in women’s history of the marathon.

The race, despite the cold and the wind, was a great one this year. This race brings everyone together from far away, Kipsang from Kenya, and Mrs. Tunstead from Westhampton Beach High School who also ran in this year’s marathon. The marathon also makes for a great race that people for years will love and celebrate with their families.
