When the phone rings at 5:45 am and the caller ID says “Westhampton Beach School District” students’ dreams come true: snow day. But, if the days start to accumulate, it could become a spring breaker’s nightmare.

According to our superintendent, Mr. Radday, the school calendar has one snow day built into the calendar and we have already used three. For those concerned about their vacation plans, in a recent email, he said, “The Board of Education and I will be making a decision over the next couple of weeks about how to deal with the school calendar.”

On our first snow day, January 22, Governor Cuomo declared a state of emergency, which means that due to weather people should stay off the roads and we can not go to school. Also, the third snow day of this year, February 5th, was declared a state of emergency by Governor Cuomo.  He said, “This is a significant winter storm impacting all regions of the state and we are taking all necessary steps to keep New Yorkers safe.”  In a situation where a snow day occurred during a state of emergency, the superintendent can apply for a waiver from the state in hopes of getting the days forgiven.

We will keep you posted and let you know as soon as a decision is made!
