Every student in WHBHS can’t wait for the three day weekend, but not everyone knows why. On November 11th, a national holiday is celebrated commemorating those who served for our country, and WHBHS has some of their very own veterans.

Veteran’s Day was first officially celebrated November 11th, 1919, and called Armistice day. Veteran’s Day came about when World War I officially ended. The original concept was a brief suspension in the day to appreciate those who have served for America. But Veteran’s Day was not made part of a three day weekend until 1968 when many states agreed that it would encourage travel, and simulate greater industrial and commercial production.

Westhampton Beach has its very own veterans including alumni from last years graduating class of 2013! Matt Lewis talked about why Veteran’s Day is important to him. “Veterans day is important to me because it makes me remember the sacrifices that service members have made such as giving their life for us.” he said.

Matt joined the Marine Corporation on June 14th, 2012. Matt has been wanting to join the Marines since he was five years old.  He said, “I joined the military so I could protect my family and those I care about.”

Many of the teachers at Westhampton Beach are veterans. History teacher Mr. Williams is a Navy veteran.  “I chose the Navy because my dad had been in it,” he stated. Veteran’s Day is important to him because “it’s a good day to remember all the guys I have served with.” Mr. Williams served four years in active duty and five years with the guard and reserve. His favorite memory while in service is, “Coming home to the United States from the Persian Gulf.” As a Veteran he wants people to know, “It’s important that everyone understands how much sacrifice is involved.”

So, when you are enjoying your three day weekend, take a moment to think about the men and women who have served this country over the years. On Tuesday, veterans will be visiting the HS talk to us about their time in the service.
