Senior AP art students have started their long awaited final project. Colorful story telling murals are being painted onto the once blank halls of WHBHS.
At the end of each school year, the AP Art students have to submit their portfolio, containing their best work throughout the year to the college board. This process is lengthy, while some students are able to turn in their best work immediately, others have to re-start whole projects to capture the true essence of their skills. Once the students have submitted their portfolio, they begin the art work we all see in the halls of our school.
The inspiration for these murals are unknown to the general school population, Senior Brooke Bahr shared the true meaning of her mural, “I wanted something beach-y related to represent our community as Westhampton Beach, but our school doesn’t only have people from Westhampton, we have other communities as well such as East Moriches, Remsenburg, etc. I wanted to create a sign on the beach landscape pointing to the different towns that make up our school.”
Although this final project is supposed to be fun, and easy going, everything comes with its challenges. Senior Isabelle Schneider expressed some of the hardships throughout her process, “I definitely have had my worries when I leave the area because I’m afraid of people touching it, especially when the paint is still wet, but thankfully my location is in a less busy area so I haven’t had too many problems while working. Sometimes I’ll be working there for three periods straight with some compliments here and there which always makes me happy.”
Overall, AP Art students’ mural projects have made the school hallways a vibrant gallery that depicts creativity, collaboration, and school pride. Through their dedication and artistic purpose, these students have not only contributed beauty to the school, but have also left a lasting impression that catches the eyes of everyone who walks through these halls.
