Divergent Movie Premiere

Divergent+Movie+Premiere

On March 21st Divergent, a movie based on the first book of the best selling trilogy, premiered. Although it is on sophomore English students’ required reading list, many of the students enjoyed the book and are excited about the movie’s release.

Divergent is about a dystopian society where citizens are divided into five factions that each encompass a different characteristic. The factions are the Abnegation, who represent selflessness, the Amity, who practice peace, the Dauntless, who are brave, the Erudite, who pursue intelligence, and the Candor, who strive for complete honesty.

These five factions were said to be the answer for humanity’s imperfections, but the leaders of the factions turned out to be corrupt. They tried to kill and suppress the people who were Divergent, or in other words, they had more than one of the five characteristics. In response to the leaders’ corruptness, the main character, Tris, stages a rebellion.

The movie premier was disappointing for some, but amazing for most! The few who were disappointed complained about the missing details in the movie, however most know that it would be impossible to include everything that was in the book. Overall, Divergent was successful in capturing the essence of the book.

Divergent’s unique premise and excitement-filled pages capture the attention of everyone who reads the book. “I liked Divergent because there was constant action throughout the whole book that kept me entertained,” said Mira Patel. Jamie Hoare agreed with this, adding that “its concept is really interesting.”

Although most would agree that it’s hard to pick the best part of the book, Mira said, “My favorite part was probably when the Dauntless initiates had a capture the flag game, and Tris climbed to the top of the Ferris wheel.” The Dauntless initiates are the new members of that Faction. They have to go through tests that determine if they are able to become part of the Dauntless family. These tests include many fight scenes, which is what Jamie is most excited to see in the movie.

“I would recommend this book to others because it’s a quick, entertaining read,” said Jamie. Mira added, “It’s a great read, especially for people who like books such as The Hunger Games.
