Rec Night is an event that takes place in the Middle School for students in 7th and 8th grade. They all gather together at the back of the school day in the gym and play the games that are provided, to have a good time on their Friday night. Rec is a great way for the kids in Middle School to become closer with one another and have an exciting time growing up.

The Middle School provides a night for the kids, Friday March 6, starting at 6-7:30pm for a night of fun! At Rec they provide games for the teens to play such as; basketball, dodgeball, foosball and ping pong. Also, the kids can just hangout and watch these activities and talk to their friends. This night is always a good night for the kids because there are so many opportunities of things for the kids to do.  An 8th grader, Noah Morgado, attending the middle school here in Westhampton Beach said that “It’s a lot of fun, I went last year and we were able to do a lot of cool things.” This event always has a great turn out. A lot of the young teens go to this event because they consider it a cool ‘hangout place.’ Morgado said “I found out about Rec Night last year when I was in 7th by my friends asking me if I wanted to go.” So clearly word travels fast. Rec is always a good way to get to know maybe someone different by just playing a game with them and sharing a laugh.

Putting together this event must take a lot of work and time, taking their own time and watching these teens have a great time. Mrs. Wiles, a teacher here at WHBHS and Key Club Advisor, is part of this event and helps organize it. When asked what was the purpose of starting rec, she stated “So, Rec night was started before I was the advisor for Key Club, but Kiera Solomon a senior at WHBHS really is the driving force behind keeping it going and making it such a success. The whole point is that we want to welcome the incoming freshmen. We want them to feel like they know some kids when they start in the fall.  Last year’s participants started a Facebook page, and really got to know each other during the summer, so when they came in in September, they already knew some people. Also, they will have met some upper class men, so that helps the whole ‘new school’ thing less intimidating as well.” Rec is for an hour and half on a Friday night. You can do almost everything active there, they try to provide the kids most favorite games. Anyone in 8th can attend this event to feel even more welcomed. There is an eight dollar admission. Kids will also be able to purchase snacks. It is a fundraiser for the Thirst Project, which is a Key Club focus this year to  build a water well in Africa.

Rec Night was a high success, everyone had a good time. Hard work was payed off for the administrators, next year will be just as much fun so if you’ll be an 8th grader excited to come in for 9th,come join the fun!
