Inside Marine Science

Marine Science is one of the many unique science courses offered to WHB students. Juniors and seniors, dive into this course on oceanology.

This year, 58 students took the opportunity to learn more about marine life. Senior Carly Bossung said the class entails “emotional attachments to your tank, essays, and lots of available extra credit.”  Junior Ryan Duncan said that “caring for your own marine organisms” is the main purpose of the class.

According to Mr. Kommer, the class consists of studying physical and biological oceans but “mostly biological oceans because I’m better at that part.” Also, this class is not the hardest, but not the easiest by any stretch.

Mr. Kommer said, “Most juniors and seniors say that it has as much work as a light AP course. If you’re taking it to do no work at all, then this is not the place for you.”

Marine is a well-loved course by most who take it. Carly said, “I love the relaxed feeling his classroom has.” Ryan agreed with that, but also added, “This class is a lot more fun than other science classes I have taken, but at times has hard work.”

Mr. Kommer said his favorite part about teaching Marine Science is “probably the same as the kids – the active stuff, the tanks, the field trips. But also the environmental science part of it.”

Taking this course because you think it will be easy and just fun with fish is not the reason you should chose this class. “You still have to work to do well,” said Mr. Kommer.

Even though this may not be an easy course, it is still a great option due to other factors. Carly said she chose this class over other available classes because “it feels more real. It’s mostly things we can touch or see and compare to our tanks instead of elements of the periodic table.”
