In high school, every person has a dream career that they aspire to be. Did you know that Mr. Kochis wanted to be a doctor? And that Mr. Hoyt wanted to be a professional athlete? What made them switch their dreams? Let’s find out why the teachers wanted to become teachers.

When Math teacher Mr. Kochis was a freshman, he wanted to become a doctor. As the years went by his mind was changed and he by his senior year, he realized that he wanted to be a teacher. He went to college for math education but it wasn’t until he had a certain professor in college did he know he made the correct decision.

“I wanted to help people and when I was in math class myself, I always enjoyed helping other students in my class with math.” As a teacher your job is to share your knowledge with others and help them learn what you know. That’s exactly what Mr. Kochis enjoys doing. Mr. Kochis said, “I have enjoyed every moment of teaching here at WHB and the experiences I have been able to share each year with my students.”

When Health teacher Mr. Hoyt was in high school, his dream profession would’ve been some sort of professional athlete. He went to college for physical education and health, knowing that he wanted to become a teacher. He completed college with a physical education teaching degree and completed his health certification shortly after. “I have always wanted to help others and feel that I have impacted someone’s life in a positive way.”

In high school, he had a math teacher/coach who always encouraged him to work his hardest and taught him valuable life lessons. Mr. Hoyt started teaching at WHB when his friend, elementary school physical education teacher, Mr. Peters was looking for a coach for the lacrosse program. He started as a substitute teacher and has been here ever since. Mr. Hoyt hopes that his teaching and coaching has influenced students the way his coach/teacher influenced him.

Teachers have one of the toughest jobs to do. They have to teach their subject and hope to influence the students they teach in a positive way. Many people switch their career choices and enjoy it even more than their original choice. So keep your options open and enjoy anything you choose to do.
