This year, the WHB cheerleading program has undergone some pretty big changes. The cheer team’s fate was determined by the budget cuts last year. Who knows what could happen next.
The junior varsity games are a different experience than the varsity games. The varsity games are usually held on Friday nights and the stands are filled with fans. JV has a pretty big crowd too, but not as large as varsity. Sophomore Eric Caldwell said, “It’s strange at the games not having the extra motivation and the constant cheering. My teammates and I miss the cheerleaders.”
Cheerleader, Alyssa Jacino said, “Our team is a lot smaller than usual this year. Last year I think we had about 15 girls just on JV! This year we have 19 girls on varsity. This year we only have four under classmen!”
Coached by Mrs. Taylor, the team is doing well. However, she is fully aware of the possibilities that the future could hold. Mrs. Taylor said, “With no junior varsity team, there is no room for growth. For cheerleading, there is usually a hierarchy that most schools follow. It goes from PAL, to middle school, to junior varsity, then finally varsity. We could have people trying out that are coming to a varsity level with no experience.”
However, this year, our team came up with about five to six new cheers and new motions to go along with them! We are prepared for this seasons games and are excited to see what happens next! Come see the cheerleaders this Friday at 6 pm vs. Comeswogue!!
