WHB girls varsity cheerleaders are competing in a new fall season and are looking forward to a great winter season.
This fall, for the first time in WHB history, the girls varsity cheerleaders are competing in the Game Day Division.
The Game Day Division is completely different from the Traditional Division. It focuses on crowd engagement and overall technique rather than difficult stunting and tumbling, as seen in the winter season.
Coach Alexa explained the difference. “Most importantly, it gets the athletes into a competitive mindset early and brings a new sense of motivation to every practice that I do not typically get to see in the fall season.”
Last winter season, the team traveled to the ESPN High School Cheer Nationals held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. This was the program’s first time getting a bid at Regionals. The team hopes to get another bid this year.
With the help of their captains, the team is putting in the work to perfect their routines for regionals. Senior captain Kara Salvaggio said, “I’m helping the team by being a leader and helping the younger girls who are new to the sport all work as a team and bond as a family.”
Senior captain Emily Edwards, has been working on team morale. She said, “I also try to keep the energy at practice as positive as possible even during high stress days leading up to competitions.”
Emphasizing the importance of growth and teamwork in addition to winning, Coach Alexa said, “Winning is great, but true success often comes from the growth we experience as a team. The lessons we learn together along the way, and the bond we build through those tough times.”
It’s clear that the WHB cheerleaders’ determination, leadership, and spirit are stronger than ever as they enter the remaining fall competitions and get ready for another thrilling winter season.
