Fore!!! That’s a phrase the Westhampton Beach golf team has not had to use much this season, considering their almost perfect record 9-1. The golf team has a very impressive record this year. There have been many important steps to create this impressive record.
According to head coach Musumeci, “We had a big turn over from last year with the loss of a lot of good seniors Owen Jessop and Charlie Beasley and we are a young team now. This means younger guys have to step up and take a bigger role if we want to win another county title.”
Senior Dagny Beasley believes the team’s chemistry has benefited them. She said, “The team is a lot closer together than previous years, we have grown a lot closer and it helped because we were friends and we supported each other in challenging matches and difficult shots.”
Dagny, the only girl on the team, said, “Many girls may not know that you can be on the team, I might encourage more girls to try out.”
During the division championship this Friday, October 17 the golf team won and Zach Berger was named individual Tournament champion with an incredible round of 69.
With Zach and Dagny both being seniors that means the team will lose two major players. Juniors Nicholas Arena and Caden Padavan will have to step up and take the role of being leaders next season.
Nico said “Next year becoming a senior on the golf team means I will have to set great examples for all new and younger athletes on the team by showing them the ropes of varsity.”
We also talked to Caden, the other junior on the team, he said, “I’ve put in a lot of extra practice this year, especially on my short game and drives. The hard work has helped me play better consistently and I know I will just work even harder next season.”
Sophomore Dan Schumacher has been a crucial piece as the second seed on the team. Schumacher explains how Berger has been a role model for him, “Zach helps me with everything, he gives me a read and coaches me through tough shots. He’s taken me under his wing and playing with him is very special to me and is beneficial to my game.”
Sophomore Benny Presutti, said his first year on varsity has been a great experience do to the upper classman. He said, “I see Dagny and Zach as role models to me and really people I can go to for advice.”
Senior Zach Berger who won the Suffolk County Championship for the second consecutive year, will be attending Loyola University in the fall. He said, “I hope to go pretty far and the ultimate goal is to one day become pro.”
