With the school year coming to the end, the football team is getting ready to prepare for next season. The boys are excited and hungry for a Suffolk County Championship.
The Canes are ready to get this season on the road with practices starting in early June. The Canes have already completed their first challenge at Rogers Beach.
After going 6-4 last season and losing in the semi-finals, the Canes are looking for that championship.
Changes are coming to the Canes’ schedule. With Kings Park leaving Division III, Smithtown West and West Islip are joining. The Canes start off the season with a home game at Smithtown West and end off the regular season with an away game at Islip. The Canes have a competitive schedule and must perform if they want to make it to Stony Brook.
Head coach, Coach Shaum, said, “This year will be special. We have lots of returning talent that can be important throughout the season. We are excited to get going.”
With many returning seniors, the Canes are looking forward to having lots of leaders with experience. Rising senior Patrick Fay said, “As a senior I feel like I have become a big leader, and I expect knowing how skilled our team is that we can win the Suffolk County Championship.”
With the upcoming season the team will also have returning and incoming junior QB Jake Calloway. Calloway had an impressive sophomore season, missing four games due to an injury yet still reaching All-Division status. “There’s always some pressure being the quarterback but it is not just about me. We all play as a team and I have great teammates that I put all of my trust into. I will be putting in the off-season and bonding with the team to gain that team chemistry,” he said.
With high expectations and a motivated team, anything can happen this season. Come out and get ready for the Hurricanes homecoming October 3rd on the turf!
