The Westhampton Beach Girls Lacrosse program has been one of the strongest teams on Long Island for years. This year the 2025 team and players set many records, making this season memorable for all of the girls on the team.
With several D1 commits on the team, the stakes and expectations were set high for this season. With an impressive overtime win against nationally ranked New Canaan, the spotlight and pressure was on for the remainder of the season. The team set a record for most league and non-league wins in program history, showing their hard work and preparation for the upcoming playoff games and brackets.
What made this team so unique? Junior Ava Derby said, “This year’s team was constantly working hard on and off the field…. I think what made this team so strong was our bond, we were always spending time together and hanging out… we were each other closest friends.”
Senior – captain, Hailey Donahoe said, “This team and season was my favorite of highschool, we were all so close and all our hard work paid off and helped us get ready for playoffs.” The team worked endlessly the whole season to prepare for the playoffs.
Head Coach Mary Bergmann was asked what made this team special and said, “This year we had a lot of returners and talented players who knew their expectations and goals for this season. Everyone’s skill level was so high so the team was able to practice more game-like scenarios and plays rather than working on individual skills.”
Bergmann also shared that next year’s team shows lots of promise with 18 returning players and excitement as the team is moving into the B Division. “This caused lots of excitement as the 2022 team won LIC and went undefeated in this division, so it will give the girls on the team an opportunity to defend that title.”
The preparation for playoffs was key, Bergmann said, “The biggest part of playoff preparation was going over scouting reports of opponents, running through plays, and because of injuries on the team players were moved around to new positions to get the best mix of girls playing together in certain positions.”
The team earned a first round win against Kings Park through these strategies. Although the season did end in the semifinals in a 9-7 loss against the highly ranked Sayville, this season was one for the books. The team had the most league wins in program history (11) , most overall wins in a season (14), most ever goals (207), and 239 draw controls (most ever in program history).
