The boys tennis season is finally over, and there have been plenty of exciting moments and accomplishments throughout the season.
The team finished second in the division with 12 wins and 3 losses, with only the Ross School being in front. The team made the quarter-finals of the section eleven playoffs, and the first doubles team of Bryce Groth and Giancarlo Volpe nearly made it to the state tournament at Flushing Meadows. Overall, the boys tennis team had a very successful season, and we can reflect on some of the highlights, and talk about what’s next.
The team avenged the previous year’s loss to Shoreham Wading-River with an emphatic 6-1 home victory, demonstrating the increase in strength relative to last year’s team. The doubles pair that shined the entire season, including this match was the duo of Bryce Groth and Giancarlo Volpe. This team rarely lost the whole season, and nearly made the state tournament at the U.S Open grounds. Junior Bryce Groth says that the secret to the team’s success is their understanding of each other’s respective playstyles, saying that “We understood each of the ways we try to play”.
While the tennis team had a great showing this year, they are losing many players to graduation. Seniors Giancarlo Volpe, Matt Moran, and Alessandro Imundi are all leaving the team, which will force the younger players to step up next season. However, Matt Moran is unconcerned about the team’s prospects after his departure, saying that “If everybody practices hard, and works in the offseason, we’ll be fine.”
Among the younger prospective players to join the varsity team next year are Freshman Jack Gibbons, and Sophomore Nico Grazina from the junior varsity squad, who will provide much-needed depth.
