The third annual Unified field day took place on Friday, June 6th. Once again, the day, which was organized by the Best Buddies club, was a success. This year’s theme was superheroes.
One of the organizers, junior Addison Celi said, “Best Buddies advisors are invited to be leaders and help run the event. Most of the athletes are in Best Buddies as well. Not only are Westhampton Beach leaders invited, but the other school’s leaders are invited to attend.”
Other organizers included Angeley Bardales, Katie Burke, Reagan Moran, Antonella Russo, Nic Simone and the advisor Mr. Davis (gym/unified teacher).
Addison said, “This year’s theme was ‘Everyone has their own superpower.’ This message is meant to raise awareness about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to emphasize how incredible and unique their talents are.”
Sophomore Angely Bardales, who was responsible for making sure everything was prepared, collecting money for shirts through fundraisers, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly said, “My favorite thing about UFD was working with all the kids and getting to know every one of them; it’s something so special that we can make possible.”
Friday’s weather was absolutely perfect for the activities on the turf. Four local schools – Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays, Easthampton and Southampton came together to make it a special day for the students in the Unified classes.
If you missed this year’s event, Angely said, “Everyone should try to get involved with the program, it is something significant and special that not everyone gets the opportunity to participate in.”
